Official scorers, however, disagreed.

LaVine was never given the assist, leaving him with five assists for the game. Sportsbooks had his prop line set at 5.5 assists.

Large betting communities included his assist total in long-shot parlays worth significant amounts. Within 60 seconds, social media platforms, Discord communities, and betting forums were sharing clips of the play, tagging the NBA Stats account and calling for it to be corrected.

The NBA declined.

The incident demonstrated how much attention the betting community pays to official stat scoring decisions, as a play that would have otherwise gone unnoticed became one of the most discussed moments of the month, not because of the result, but because of the way it impacted player prop wagers.

Several high-profile statistical corrections ensued.

An assist credited to Chris Paul was reassigned to Mikal Bridges following the Phoenix Suns game against the Utah Jazz. Anthony Edwards from the Timberwolves was also awarded a steal after playing his game against the Golden State Warriors.

While the NBA maintains that betting activity does not influence the decisions made regarding scoring, betting communities are able to detect statistical errors, which is helping to raise awareness of the calls made in a game.

NBA stat corrections are not becoming more common, as according to the Elias Sports Bureau, the NBA's official statistician, official corrections remain rare, even though hundreds of data points are recorded in a single season. NBA Senior Vice President Scott Kaufman-Ross has acknowledged that sports betting has put a spotlight on official statistics. While accurate stat keeping has been important to the league for quite some time, public interest in scoring decisions has risen significantly.

Every NBA game is scored by multiple on-site callers and inputters alongside NBA officials in New Jersey, all of whom have access to multiple replay angles while recording hundreds of statistical events in real time. 

What makes things challenging for the NBA in particular is that basketball has almost no downtime, especially when compared to football or baseball, making it harder for subjective stats to be accurate.

The NBA has Adapted Beyond Stat Keeping

The rise of betting has forced the NBA to adapt in ways beyond stat keeping. The NBA now requires game-day injury updates every 15-minutes, giving bettors, and sportsbooks more accurate information. 

Sportsbooks are also reducing exposure to vulnerable markets, including certain single-play proposition bets regarding free throws and fouls.

Operators including FanDuel have paid both sides of affected wagers in some high-profile cases to avoid customers losing because of an official scoring error, while many traditional Las Vegas sportsbooks continue grading bets using the initial official box score. 

While this improves the customer experience for bettors, it does demonstrate the impact of a single corrected assist or how a steal can affect thousands of bets.

Fans are Watching the Game Differently 

Modern broadcasters now feature advanced analytics, live betting odds, win probabilities, and even player performance metrics that go beyond traditional commentary. Casual viewers are becoming familiar with advanced statistics, matchup data, and trends, even though at one point, this information was only usable by coaches and analysts.
