Asia Is Leading the Next Retail Revolution

By 2035, the Asia-Pacific region is set to become the biggest consumer market in the world.

The Asia-Pacific region is set to become the biggest consumer market in the world by 2035. Today, consumers are confident and motivated by experiences that are memorable, as opposed to simple transactions. They also expect brands to remove friction from the process and to find ways to make everyday shopping more enjoyable.

Retail is Becoming about the Experience

Traditional retail spaces are evolving far beyond product displays and are becoming more immersive and interactive. Retailers are going so far as to create sensory experiences, as well as theatrical environments, to help consumers engage with brands.

As 80% of shoppers across the Asia-Pacific region rely on brand reward programmes to unlock exclusive experiences, it's clear that there’s a lot of demand for memorable retail moments, rather than just discount codes.

By transforming stores into showrooms, shoppers spend more time looking around, engage on a deeper level, and build stronger, more emotional connections to brands.

Luxurious brands like Louis Vuitton are already demonstrating this movement with their hotel-inspired activations in destinations like Shanghai and Seoul. Rooftop terraces, room exhibitions and champagne bars all mirror the brand’s heritage and take retail one step further.

Across Asia, brands are using gamification to transform shopping from being a chore into an experience. 76% of online consumers in India believe that online shopping lacks excitement, but extended reality displays and gamified mechanics encourage people to participate.

The Role of AI Behind the Scenes

While speed and convenience are at the heart of retail, shoppers also expect AI to work for them. 85% of shoppers in Southeast Asia are using AI-powered shopping tools to find new products. Retailers are also starting to deploy AI throughout their operations. By using intelligent systems to personalise recommendations, coordinate deliveries and even improve logistics, shoppers can have a smoother buying experience.

Alibaba is embracing this already with the Gwen App, which connects services, including Amap, Fliggy, and Alipay, into a single interface that allows people to find products, make payments, and arrange delivery for them, in a single platform.

The Next Generation of Retail

As time goes on, Asia is continuing to redefine what retail looks like. Whether it is through immersive physical spaces to seamlessly integrated AI or even advanced technology, shopping experiences are no longer about selling products. It’s about creating experiences that customers actively want to return to.
